I believe that the transition costs are low enough that it is relatively easy to switch from one tool to another in case the majority of your friends or contacts are moving on - say from MySpace to Facebook. At some point, it is too costly to stay on one platform, because you are no longer integrated in the information flow. Basically: You want to join the party that everyone wants to go to.
